Sir Crispin Galliard, the swaggering, bottle-loving Cavalier known as the Tavern Knight, rides with the Royalist army to Worcester in 1651 beside a pale, disapproving young companion. After the defeat, hunted and on the run, he takes up again a revenge he has nursed for years against the man who destroyed his family, and finds Cynthia caught in the middle.
