Cephas, now living far away, recalls the Georgia town of Shady Dale in the years after the Civil War. Soldiers return, old families face ruin, Gabriel Tolliver and Nan grow up together, and newcomers organise the Union League and a political machine among the freedmen, raising tensions that draw the townspeople into intrigue and violence.
Harris’s novel of Reconstruction, written from a white Southern viewpoint deeply hostile to it and best read as a document of that outlook. Download the free EPUB.
