Reuben Backfield, a young farmer of Peasmarsh near Rye, vows to conquer Boarzell Moor, a heaving waste of gorse and heather that no one has ever tamed. Over decades he sacrifices sons, wives and neighbours to the struggle, while Alice Jury of Cheat Land, chief in the enemy’s camp, remains the one person he turns to.
The novel that made Kaye-Smith’s name, a powerful Sussex epic of land and obsession. Download the free EPUB.
