Two late tales of the uncanny. In the first, old Mrs. Jolliffe remembers being sent as a girl to Applewale House to wait upon the ancient, painted Madam Crowl, and what she came to learn about a locked door in that house. In the second, the village of Golden Friars is troubled after its disreputable sexton dies, and a stranger arrives on a winter’s night.
