At two in the morning, Dr. Bianchon entertains a Paris salon with the story of a deserted house on the banks of the Loir near Vendôme. Piece by piece he learns from a lawyer and an innkeeper’s wife why Madame de Merret’s home was abandoned, and what happened in her room one night.
One of Balzac’s most chilling short tales, a model of the horror story. Download the free EPUB.
