Both cases come from the papers of Dr. Martin Hesselius, a German physician who treats the uncanny as a medical problem. In the first, the scholarly Reverend Mr. Jennings is followed everywhere by a small black monkey that no one else can see; in the second, a brutal eighteenth-century judge finds that the men he sent to the gallows have not finished with him.
