In 1925 an ethnologist goes into Oklahoma looking for snake lore and comes out with a lifelong fear. At an asylum he hears the old story of Walker and Audrey Davis, pioneers who came to the territory in 1889, of Walker’s horror of rattlesnakes, and of what followed when a nest of them was killed in a land where the Indians still feared the father of serpents.
