In 1817 and 1818 John Oxley, Surveyor General of New South Wales, led two government expeditions west of the Blue Mountains. His journals follow the Lachlan and Macquarie rivers into vast marshes and plains, record the land, rivers, flood marks and people the party met, and describe the long route back to the coast.

A primary source for the exploration of inland Australia, with the hardships of early colonial travel on every page. Download the free EPUB.
