On 11 July 1897 the balloon Örnen rose from Spitsbergen carrying Andrée, Strindberg and Frænkel toward the North Pole, and vanished. Its French builder Henri Lachambre and his nephew Alexis Machuron, who helped inflate and launch it, tell the story of the engineer Andrée, the voyage north, two months of preparation at Spitsbergen and the departure.
A first-hand account of one of the most haunting episodes in Arctic exploration, written while the explorers’ fate was unknown. Download the free EPUB.
