Kitty Fane, bored in colonial Hong Kong, falls into an affair with the charming Charles Townsend. When her husband Walter, a quiet bacteriologist, finds out, he gives her a choice and then takes her deep into mainland China, where cholera is killing a city. Among the dying, and the French nuns who nurse them, Kitty begins to see her life differently.
A taut, unsparing novel of marriage and moral awakening, inspired by a passage in Dante, from one of the century’s best storytellers. Download the free EPUB.
