John Gourlay, the carrier of Barbie, is the proudest and most hated man in the town, and his house with the green shutters is the emblem of his power. When a sharper rival arrives and trade turns, Gourlay pins his hopes on his weak, imaginative son, while the town’s malicious “bodies” watch and talk in broad Scots.
A ferocious 1901 answer to the cosy Kailyard school, and a landmark of Scottish fiction. Download the free EPUB.
