Hay opens by admitting that war novels are said to be no longer read, and then writes one anyway, following a set of characters from the pre-war world into the army and through the years of strain. Uncles and nephews, colonels and subalterns trade affectionate insults over paperwork and command, while the novel asks who really bears the weight of a nation’s work.
