On Dartmoor, where furze suggests cruelty, heather endurance and granite strength, Trevena follows the Tavy family, the parish of Brightly, its pastor and schoolmaster, the girl Thomasine and the waif Boodles. Moorland superstition, poverty, music, fairy lore and petty tyranny tangle together in a portrait of a closed and often brutal community.
The first of Trevena’s Dartmoor trilogy, published in 1907, a striking rival to Eden Phillpotts’s moorland novels. Download the free EPUB.
