Victor Jones, an Australian-born drifter calling himself of Philadelphia, sits beaten in the lounge of the Savoy when a stranger who looks exactly like him strikes up a conversation. After a dinner and a joke, Jones wakes to find himself living as Rochester, a rich and titled Englishman, with a house in Carlton House Terrace, debts, enemies and a woman who loves the man he is not.
