In Morovenia, a half-Turkish, half-Europeanised little state, beauty is measured by the pound, and Princess Kalora is hopelessly slender. Custom forbids her plump younger sister to marry until Kalora does, so her father tries every fattening cure in vain, until a young American millionaire arrives with very different ideas about what makes a woman lovely.
