Sir John Goldencalf, heir to a fortune and a theory of ‘social stake’, meets a troupe of talking monkeys in the Swiss Alps and sails with them to their homeland near the South Pole. There the rival monkey nations of Leaphigh and Leaplow turn out to be thinly disguised versions of aristocratic England and democratic America.
Cooper’s strangest book, a Gulliver-style lampoon of both nations’ politics, for readers who know him only from The Last of the Mohicans. Download the free EPUB.
