In a forest village of the Congo, a storyteller called the Alo Man gathers the children around him while the drum sounds. His tales explain why the leopard hunts the dog, why the cat and the rat are enemies, how the jackal hides his tracks and why the canoe upset, and between them the village lives its life of hunting, maize fields and visiting elephants. Its view of Africa is that of an American schoolbook of 1921.
