During the War of the Spanish Succession, a young Englishman is pressed into service and after rough adventures, including a spell among pirates, becomes an officer under Charles Mordaunt, Earl of Peterborough. He shares in the daring capture of Barcelona and the lightning campaigns that made Peterborough, as Henty argues in his preface, one of the most brilliant and forgotten generals of his age.
