Wade Brooks will not join Lon Trustleton, the rich captain’s son, in raiding a peach orchard, and his honesty earns him only a horsewhip and a supperless bed. Striking out for independence, he finds lodgings afloat, hides beneath a berth from the rough Captain Bendig and fights his way down the river toward a better life.
