After a red-bearded giant named Big Pete Ellis flees a country store in a stolen wagon, two boys and a runaway bound boy begin a long journey west into the wilderness. Mountain roads, a man hidden under a bed, a mysterious shot in the dark and uncertain meetings in the forest test their nerve.
