Billy Barcroft flies with the Royal Naval Air Service over the North Sea, hunting enemy submarines and Zeppelins from seaplanes and ships. Written while the First World War was raging, the story is frank about its wartime hostility to Germans, as a later preface acknowledges, and it is packed with seaplane patrols, narrow escapes and a price on the hero’s head.
