Long follows the creatures of the New England woods, each known by a name of his own: Tookhees the timid wood mouse, Keeonekh the otter, Koskomenos the outcast kingfisher, Meeko the red squirrel who steals peanuts from his windowsill, an old beech partridge, and the deer he tracks through the snow. Each sketch mixes patient observation with a storyteller’s sympathy.
Long was later accused by Theodore Roosevelt of being a nature faker, yet his sketches remain charming reading for young nature lovers. Download the free EPUB.
