Dedicated to Rider Haggard, these stories show Lang in playful mood: the last days of Homer’s Phaeacia, a modern man who wakes in a heaven made for other peoples, the romance of the first radical in a prehistoric tribe, a duchess’s secret and a house of strange stories. One tale’s title and its treatment of slavery carry the racial language and attitudes of the 1880s.
