Lucy refuses to buy a set of pretty tablets on credit, though her friend calls her foolish and the shopman says she can pay another time. At boarding school her plain honesty is tested against vanity, schoolgirl fashions and a wayward friend, Emily, whose drift from her prayers and duties Lucy watches with concern.
