Hazel, a Black girl raised in Boston, is sent south to stay with her grandmother for the sake of her health. Among farm animals she fears, a steady boy named Scip and the old-time religion of the countryside, she learns a life utterly unlike her city world. Ovington wrote it, her preface says, so that Black children could read about lives like their own.
An early children’s book with Black heroes, by a co-founder of the NAACP; its dialect and some attitudes are those of 1913. Download the free EPUB.
