Young Jimmie Dunn, who learns Apache ways as a boy, later serves with General George Crook’s pack-trains and Indian scouts through the Arizona campaigns from 1871 to 1886. Sabin presents Crook as a soldier of kindness and honesty, though the book’s view of the Apaches is that of its time.
