Squire Trevannion of Cornwall dies leaving his estate ruined, and his two sons must seek their fortunes abroad. The story follows the family to South America, where, travelling down the Amazon on a raft-boat called the Galatea, they are caught by the annual flood and carried into the gapo, the drowned forest, drifting among the treetops through storms, monkeys and birds with dwindling hopes of a way out.
