Preserved in the Vercelli Book, this Old English poem tells how Christ sends the apostle Andrew across the sea to rescue Matthew from the Mermedonians, a cannibal people who blind and imprison strangers. Robert Kilburn Root’s blank-verse translation keeps the heroic diction of the original, with its thanes, halls and storm-tossed voyage.
A vivid piece of Anglo-Saxon religious epic, for readers of Beowulf and early English literature. Download the free EPUB.
