Fridthjof, son of a free yeoman, grows up beside Ingeborg, daughter of the king, and loves her; when her brothers refuse him, a quarrel begins that sends him to sea, to the hall of the old jarl Angantyr and back to Balder’s temple. Tegnér’s cycle of poems retells an Icelandic saga in shifting verse forms.
