From June 1916 a young painter serving in France wrote home to Helen about the slow troop trains, the mud, the shell holes, the woods torn apart by artillery and the odd moments of beauty he saw between duties. The letters were never meant for publication and were gathered only when his drawings from the front were reproduced.
