Wynne traces English drama from the liturgical plays of the medieval Church on the Continent through the English miracle cycles, moralities and interludes, to the rise of comedy and tragedy and the playwrights who prepared the way for Shakespeare: Lyly, Greene, Peele, Nash, Lodge, Kyd and Marlowe. He gives plots, characters and samples of the verse.
