When their father dies leaving them almost nothing, the Lorimer sisters, Gertrude, Lucy, Phyllis and Fanny, leave their Campden Hill home and open a photographic studio of their own in London. Running a business draws them into a world of artists, customers and suitors, and into the risks of independence for young women of their class.
