Alfred Polly, fifteen years into a failing outfitter’s shop at Fishbourne and an unhappy marriage to his cousin Miriam, sits on a stile cursing his “Beastly Silly Wheeze of a Hole”. Wells looks back over his patchy schooling, apprenticeship and courtship, then lets him make one desperate decision and take to the open road.
Wells at his most humane and funny, a favourite among his comic novels. Download the free EPUB.
