Margaret Cooper is the pride of the Kentucky village of Charlemont: brilliant, ambitious and scornful of the plain young men who court her. When a smooth stranger arrives posing as a student of divinity, her pride becomes her weakness. Simms based the story on the real events behind the ‘Kentucky Tragedy’ of the 1820s and continued it in Beauchampe.
A dark frontier melodrama drawn from a notorious true crime, by the leading Southern novelist of his age. Download the free EPUB.
