Before she was known for her children’s books, Eleanor Farjeon published this slim collection of grown-up verse. It opens with a sequence of sonnets on love and self-honesty, moves through Christmas and New Year songs, a manger song and a mummers’ piece, and closes with lyrics such as Bronwen of the Flowers and Jessica Dances.
