Thomas Chatterton, a Bristol schoolboy, invented a fifteenth-century priest called Thomas Rowley and wrote for him a body of poems in a made-up medieval English. This edition prints the poems, among them Ælla, with an introduction on Chatterton’s life, death and the genesis of the forgeries, and notes on their philology and literary value.
