Edmonds describes nursing the wounded in camp hospitals and on the field during the Peninsula Campaign and after, and slipping behind Confederate lines as a spy, disguised at different times as a male contraband and as an Irish peddler woman. Fair Oaks, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Vicksburg all pass through her pages, along with dying soldiers, famished prisoners and narrow escapes.
First published in 1864; Edmonds later revealed she had also served in the 2nd Michigan Infantry disguised as a man named Franklin Thompson. Download the free EPUB.
