Colonel Surry of Eagle’s Nest, now riding on General Stuart’s staff, narrates the war in Virginia from Gettysburg to Appomattox and the mystery of his brooding comrade Mohun. Real figures such as Stuart, Lee and Mosby share the pages with spies and romances. Cooke served on Stuart’s staff, and his picture of the Confederacy is a partisan one.
