In 1860 the Victorian Exploring Expedition set out from Melbourne to cross the continent to the Gulf of Carpentaria, with Robert O’Hara Burke in command and the young surveyor William John Wills as his second. Wills’s own field journals and letters, gathered and introduced by his father in 1863, record the stony deserts, the swamps and plains, the weather readings and the dwindling stores of that crossing.
