In the summer of 1812 a hurried wedding takes place in the Marienkirche at Dantzig, and soon afterwards old Barlasch, a grizzled veteran of Napoleon’s Guard, is billeted on the bride’s household. As the Grand Army marches into Russia and stumbles back from a burning Moscow, the gruff soldier becomes the protector of the young woman whose husband has gone with it.
