In March 1857 a band of Wahpekute Dakota led by Inkpaduta fell on the scattered cabins around Lake Okoboji and Spirit Lake in northwestern Iowa. Teakle’s history, published by the State Historical Society of Iowa, traces the advancing frontier, the grievances and the Grindstone War that preceded the attack, the killings themselves, the captives taken, and the volunteer battalion that marched north through the snow.
A careful, document-based account of one of the bloodiest episodes on the Iowa frontier, written with attention to both sides. Download the free EPUB.
