William Wrenn is a timid clerk at a souvenir company in New York, lonely in his furnished room and so starved for warmth that he walks out of his way for a ticket-taker’s nod. A small legacy lets him escape to England on a cattle boat, where he wanders the countryside and falls under the spell of Istra Nash, a restless bohemian artist, before coming home to find what he really wants.
