In 1822 John Kárpáthy is the most extravagant magnate in Hungary, a hard-drinking, practical-joking lord of feasts and hunts, while his dissolute nephew Abellino waits in Paris for the old man’s estates. When the uncle decides to marry and deny him the inheritance, a struggle begins that mixes broad comedy, cruelty and real tenderness against the background of provincial gentry life.
Hailed in Hungary as a national classic, it is Jókai at his most exuberant, in R. Nisbet Bain’s translation. Download the free EPUB.
