Miln turned a popular London stage melodrama into this novel of Hong Kong. Wu Li Chang, raised by his fierce old grandfather and educated in the West, is a powerful merchant devoted to his daughter, Nang Ping. When young Basil Gregory, an Englishman, seduces her, Wu’s revenge draws in Basil’s mother, Mrs Gregory, who comes to him to plead.
