In the Sicilian fishing village of Aci Trezza, the Malavoglia family, led by old Padron ‘Ntoni, risk everything on a cargo of lupins and fall into debt to the money-lender Uncle Crucifix. Verga follows their efforts to save the house by the medlar tree with unadorned realism, letting the villagers’ own proverbs and gossip tell the tale.
The masterpiece of Italian verismo, introduced by William Dean Howells as one of the most perfect novels he knew. Download the free EPUB.
