Palamon and Arcite, cousins and sworn friends from Thebes, are captured by Theseus and imprisoned in Athens, where both fall in love with Emilia at first sight from their cell window. Their friendship turns to rivalry, while the jailer’s daughter falls hopelessly for Palamon. The story comes from Chaucer’s Knight’s Tale.
