At Smithfield’s annual fair, the proctor Littlewit, his puritan mother-in-law’s suitor Zeal-of-the-Land Busy, a disguised justice of the peace and the gullible young Bartholomew Cokes all collide with pig-women, ballad-singers, horse-dealers and pickpockets. Jonson stuffs the play with the noise and roguery of Jacobean London.
