Horace Allen, an American missionary doctor and diplomat in Korea, opens with chapters describing the country and its capital, Seoul. He then translates folk stories: the rabbit and other animal legends, the enchanted wine-jug that set cat and dog at odds, two heavenly lovers, the swallow-king’s rewards to the good brother Hyung Bo, and the faithful Chun Yang.
