Mary Eastman lived for several years at Fort Snelling, in what is now Minnesota, where her husband the artist Seth Eastman was stationed, and she listened to the Dakota people around the fort. She records their doctors, names and picture-writing, their children, and legends such as that of Wenona, who sang her death song as she went over the rapids.
A sympathetic but missionary-minded record of Dakota life on the eve of great upheaval. Download the free EPUB.
