As a girl in Calcutta and Simla, Maive Stokes listened to stories from two ayahs, Dunkní and Múniyá, and from the servant Karím, all told in Hindustani. Her collection includes Phúlmati Rání, The Pomegranate King, The Monkey Prince, Barber Hím and the Tigers and a lotus no prince could gather, with notes comparing the tales to European folklore by W. R. S. Ralston.
An early and unusually faithful record of North Indian household storytelling. Download the free EPUB.
